I’m sharing a bonus episode of the podcast today! The last time I chatted with today’s guest was in 2020 and in the midst of a lockdown during the pandemic when we did a special video together. Now, two years later, Angela Iermieri joins me on the More Money Podcast to discuss inflation, rising costs, rising interest rates, and the very real possibility that a recession is coming in the near future.

Angela Iermieri is a financial planner and personal finance expert with over 20 years of experience, as well as a spokesperson for Desjardins Group. She shares her expertise and educates people on personal finance by writing articles in various internal and external publications, and by putting together informational videos, webinars, and conferences.

In this episode, Angela outlines the differences between inflation and interest rates (and their special relationship with each other), what inflation was like at its peak in the 1980s (and why it was a very different scenario than what we're experiencing today), and what we can do as individuals in our daily lives to help quell inflation so it gets back down to a normal level.

Like many millennials, I was sold the idea that as long as I got a degree, I’d be able to secure a well-paying job and have a long and successful career. However, as I soon learned after graduation, a degree is no longer a guarantee of anything (besides years of debt repayments perhaps). That's why I knew I needed to have Dr. Zakiya Akerele on the podcast to discuss her new book, aptly named Dump Your Degree, to explore how to make the most out of your degree anyway and how to give your career a headstart if you're still working towards your diploma.

Dr. Akerele is an Atlanta-based educator and speaker. She received her Ph.D. at Fordham University and has served in various capacities at higher education institutions and at social justice, political, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) both in the U.S. and abroad. She’s also the author of Dump Your Degree: How to Repurpose Your Education, Control Your Career, and Gain Financial Freedom.

In this episode, Dr. Akerele shares what led her as a passionate educator to write this book, as well as what advice is no longer relevant for Gen Z when it comes to higher education, and why she thinks mentors are vital to a burgeoning career. She also gives some great tips on how to network with the connections you already possess.

Learning never ends when it comes to investing, which is why I’m always keen to have new guests on the show to share their unique perspectives and knowledge on the subject. This week, I’m joined by an investing expert and popular YouTuber Joseph Hogue.

After serving in the Marine Corps, Joseph Hogue went on to work in corporate finance and real estate leading him to a career in investment analysis, in which he holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation. In 2014, Joseph left behind the corporate world to build his own online business, which included starting his wildly popular YouTube channel Let’s Talk Money (seriously, he has over 550,000 subscribers!).

In this episode, Joseph shares the good and the bad about YouTube, his own investing strategy, and the terrible investing advice to avoid at all costs. Since clickbait thrives on social media platforms, Joseph also shares why you should be aware that some creators treat investing as if it's part of the entertainment industry. We get deep and nerdy about investing, so be prepared!

Have you ever wondered what it takes to run a short-term rental on Airbnb or Vrbo? Today we’re breaking down the cost, time, and skills you need to have in order to become a 5-star rated host. To help shed light on all the nitty gritty details of short-term rental ownership is Annie Sloan, the Co-Founder, and CEO of The Host Co.

As an experienced host and real estate investor herself, Annie got her start working in film and TV as a producer and director for some of your favourite HTGV shows. Since then, she has also taken on Creative Director roles at both Facebook and Twitter before co-founding her company The Host Co.

In this episode, Annie shares her passion for hospitality and how her early experiences (pre-Airbnb even) as a short-term rental host led her to create a one-stop shop for hosts to help monetize their AirBnBs while creating a better experience for their guests. Annie also shares her thoughts on it being a form of passive income and if this could be a way for the younger generation to enter the real estate market.

No one gets married thinking that they’ll get divorced one day. Unfortunately, not all marriages last and if you find yourself in this position, who do you turn to when it comes to getting help with your finances? This week on the podcast, I have CPA and author of Untying the Knot Kelly LaVallie who joins me to discuss how to navigate the complexities of untying your finances from your ex and how to start again on a good financial foot.

Kelly LaVallie is the President of LaVallie & Associates Advisory Services Ltd. with over 25 years of experience in the accounting world. After years of seeing her clients go through divorce and only being able to provide limited financial support, she made the choice to transition her firm into one that worked exclusively with clients in the stages of divorce.

Not only that, this year she released her first book, Untying the Knot - Protecting Your Emotional and Financial Health During Divorce, to help better answer people's financial questions about divorce and share how taking back control of your finances can be incredibly empowering when starting a new life for yourself.
