What’s the difference between a financial advisor and a financial planner? How do you know if you can trust the person selling you life insurance? My guest this week is answering these questions and so much more! Joining me today is Huston Loke, the Executive Vice President of Market Conduct at the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA).

Huston Loke, along with FSRA, aims to help protect consumers getting a mortgage, buying life insurance, and working with financial professionals. The Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA) was launched in 2019 but has already made significant progress in helping protect consumers seeking financial advice and services. Huston has previously served as a committee member of the Financial Stability Board and an advisor to the CEO of the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), and as the Director of Corporate Finance at the Ontario Securities Commission (OSC).

In this episode, Huston shares what exactly FSRA is doing to help protect consumers in Ontario and the red flags to look out for when seeking financial services. Additionally, he also explains the difference in financial titles and services that tend to confuse most consumers.

You might remember that a few months ago I was invited to join a YouTube accelerator program and through that, I was lucky enough to meet other Toronto-based creators. One of those creators I really enjoyed getting to know and so now she's on the show! Bisola Tijani aka WhizQueen is a YouTube and Instagram content creator whose content focuses on personal finance, being new to Canada, lifestyle and so much more!

Bisola is originally from Nigeria, but in 2019 applied and was accepted to become a permanent resident in Canada. She’s a business analyst by day, but her passions include personal finance and sharing her journey of making a new life for herself in Toronto.

In this episode, Bisola shares what it was like coming to Canada without any support system and how she managed to find a job, housing, and friends in a new country. We also talk about what it was like starting her financial life including opening a bank account, getting her first credit card, and building up a credit score. I’m so happy to have Bisola on the show and to hear her unique perspective on being an immigrant to Canada.

I have the Sassy Investor, aka Michelle Hung, joining me as a guest on the show today. In today’s episode, Michelle shares her backstory and how the Sassy Investor was born out of going through a tough time in her life. She also shares why she decided to write a book specifically for teens and young adults about how to invest and the mistakes she hopes her book will help them avoid making.

I haven't done a solo episode in over a year, so I thought the perfect time to do one would be to help kick off a new season of the podcast. In this episode, I wanted to share how my 2023 got off to an odd start and how that led me to reflect on what I want from 2023 in both terms of my life and my business.

I’m also answering lots of questions that were asked over on my Instagram and my email list, including some personal ones like how I feel about my money, especially with a recession looming and interest rates continuing to rise. Other questions include, how to use a money windfall and how to talk to your partner about money in your relationship.

Even though we’re in February, it is never too late to set some goals and intentions for the new year, especially when your finances are concerned. I hope this episode helps to give you that post-January boost to keep going so that you can have a great year!

The More Money Podcast is back for Season 16! I can’t wait to kick off the new season by interviewing TWO guests, which is a rarity and one of the reasons that I’m so excited to share this episode at the top of the season! Jen Smith and Jill Sirianni, co-hosts of The Frugal Friends Podcast, are joining me today to talk about debt and why frugality is considered the bad F-word in finance.

Jen and Jill are no strangers to debt since they’ve paid off a combined total of nearly $140k with their husbands. They approached their debt differently than some of the typical financial advice you'll hear the "gurus" sharing, which proved to them that personal finance solutions are not always one size fits all. Jen’s journey even inspired her to write The No-Spend Challenge Guide, a best-seller on Amazon. They now host Frugal Friends Podcast to help people overcome their impulse spending and transform the habits that cause them to overspend to live a better, more financially free life.

In this episode, Jen and Jill share their debt journeys and the shame and guilt that comes with paying them off. We also talk about how habit-forming and learned behaviours from childhood play a big role in your finances. Lastly, Jen and Jill share why FOMO and social media can be a leading cause for overspending and how to counteract the need to spend by figuring out your "Why" for your money.

I can’t believe we’ve come to the end of Season 15 and that 2023 is just around the corner. To help me close out this season is Cindy Zuniga-Sanchez. Cindy is joining me on the show to discuss how her background as a child of immigrants shaped her money journey and sparked her passion for learning and teaching others about personal finance.

Cindy Zuniga-Sanchez is an author, speaker, and founder of Zero-Based Budget Coaching LLC. In 2015, after racking up over $200k in student loan and credit card debt from her time at law school, Cindy decided to document her debt payoff journey on social media. This is exemplified in her new book, Overcoming Debt, Achieving Financial Freedom: 8 Pillars to Build Wealth, in which she shares her money story and provides readers with the roadmap she developed and used on her journey toward financial freedom.

In this episode, Cindy shares how impactful her upbringing as a child of immigrants was on her financial journey and how it was able to help her avoid lifestyle creep once she started her career. We also discuss why we must define financial freedom for ourselves, instead of following other people’s perceptions of it.

I want to say a HUGE thank you to everyone for listening to this season of the show and to those who have continued to support the More Money Podcast for the past 7 years! I wouldn’t be able to continue to make this podcast without you listening every week. I hope you have a wonderful holiday season and cheers to next season and 2023!

See you in January!

We’re so close to the end of Season 15 and I have an awesome guest to help wind down this season. Adam Carroll, the Founder of The Shred Method, is on the show today to talk about everything from debt to allowing yourself to take the time to figure out your life at your own pace.

Adam Carroll is a 4-time author, two-time TEDx speaker, and the creator of Broke, Busted & Disgusted, a documentary that aired on CNBC. Adam has spent the past decade studying human behaviour, particularly as it relates to personal leadership and personal finance. He’s also an internationally recognized financial literacy expert and leadership workshop facilitator.

In this penultimate episode, Adam shares his own story of getting out of debt and how debt has become normalized in our society. He also talks about the benefits of not rushing to college and acquiring student loans and the simple framework he suggests going into 2023 with a potential recession looming.

I’m so excited to have today’s guest on the show because the last time I saw her was at FinCon in 2019! I was a guest on her YouTube channel and since then her career has skyrocketed. Over the last few years, her content has gone viral and she’s busier than ever. Sharon Tseung is joining me on the show to talk about her expansive real estate portfolio, content creation, and passive income.

Sharon Tseung is a content creator and real estate investor who teaches people how to make passive income to reach financial freedom through her blog, YouTube channel, TikTok, and Instagram. She worked in marketing for 10 years at Google and other startups before she became a digital nomad for 2 years. She is now focusing on her real estate investing portfolio, which has grown to 33 cash-flowing rental units across the U.S.

In this episode, Sharon shares how she got started in real estate investing at the ripe age of 22 and what led her to create content about passive income. It was so fun to have Sharon on the show and talk about all that she’s been up to since we last saw one another in 2019. I hope this episode will give you some inspiration and know that your personal finance journey is always evolving.

I talk a lot about why learning the basics of financial literacy, like budgeting and managing your money, is an essential part of any personal finance journey. But what happens when you’ve nailed the basics? If you’re looking to level up your finance game and start to grow your money, then listen to today’s episode all about wealth literacy. I’m joined by millionaire mentor and founder of The Black Wealth Summit Cedric Nash who shares his unique perspective on wealth building in an unequal world.

Cedric Nash is an entrepreneur and investor who’s passionate about educating and inspiring the African American Community about building wealth for tomorrow and for future generations. He’s also the founder of Oakland Consulting Group Inc., an information technology consulting, software, and staffing firm. His forthcoming books Why Should White Guys Have All the Wealth? How You Can Become a Millionaire Starting from the Bottom and The Millionaire Money Moves Supplemental Investment Guide are set to be released next year and are examples of his teachings about wealth literacy and the obstacles that minorities and people of colour face every day.

In this episode, Cedric outlines his personal wealth strategies with practical advice and anecdotes from his own journey. He also shares how real estate investing factors into his wealth equation and what risks are involved in this form of investing.

What do our money habits say about us? Our relationship with money is just as nuanced and complicated as every other relationship in our life. That's why my guest today, personal finance freelance writer and author Emily Guy Birken is fascinated by the behaviours and habits we have with our money. Listen to today's episode to find out more about money psychology and her new book, Stacked: Your Super Serious Guide to Modern Money Management, written with Joe Saul-Sehy.

She has a knack for explaining complex financial topics by making them relatable and easily understandable to her readers. Her newest book, Stacked, is meant for non-money readers to help jumpstart their personal finance journey.

In this episode, Emily shares how she went from English teacher to financial writer and why she’s so interested in how our feelings surrounding money get in the way of progress. Emily also shares how the idea for her newest book came to be with co-writer Joe Saul-Sehy. Plus, Emily talks about why she believes perfection has no place in personal finance.

Often I find people are hesitant to start investing because it seems overwhelming, complicated, and like you have to start day trading like all those for investing bros on TikTok. But that couldn’t be further from the truth! Investing is for everyone and can be as complex or as simple as you want it to be. My guest today, Myron Genyk from Evermore Capital, shares these same sentiments and is on the show to discuss investing for your future made simple.

Myron Genyk is the Co-Founder and CEO of Evermore Capital, a new Canadian asset management company that introduced the first and only target date ETF series for self-directed Canadian investors.

In this episode, Myron shares what Evermore Capital is doing differently, why he’s passionate about Canadians investing for retirement, and how to not get rattled when the market is down. Myron is also sharing why Canada always seems to be behind when it comes to our investment options and how we can combat that.

I’ve been getting inundated with questions about how to save money amidst higher grocery bills, interest rates, and the expectations of a recession next year. Luckily, I have a return guest on the show whose all about sharing practical tips, or rather recipes, to help you save money with minimal effort and sacrifice. Gordon Stein, who you may remember from episode 222, is back on the show to talk about the newest edition of his book, Cashflow Cookbook.

Gordon Stein is an international keynote speaker, blogger, personal finance expert, and author of Cashflow Cookbook: $2 Million of Financial Freedom in 60 Easy Recipes. He’s on a mission to help improve people’s financial wellness without making them give up the things they love in order to save a buck.

In today’s episode, Gordon is sharing what spurred him to write an American edition of his book and why he thinks it’s more important to track your wealth rather than your budget. I also ask him to share some practical and easy steps we can take right now to help reduce our household bills without giving up the things we love.

Today I'm diving into an important topic that I've never explored before on the More Money Podcast — widowhood. When my guest, Richard Dri, lost his wife Mary in early 2020, it not only changed his life but his financial advisory business too. Richard has since switched gears to focus on helping clients navigate their finances through their grief. This episode is an incredibly important reminder to not leave estate planning until it's too late.

Richard Dri is a Certified Financial Planner with close to 30 years of experience and is currently the Portfolio Manager and Vice President of Dri Financial Group. Since the loss of his wife, Richard has been on a mission to help others navigate the financial ups and downs of widowhood, which also inspired him to launch his Widowhood and Money Podcast.

In this episode, Richard shares his own experience with widowhood as well as his advice for people experiencing this major life-altering event. We also get into the financial side of death, by which Richard shares the importance of cash flow, understanding asset allocations and fees, and why you should avoid emotional decision-making.

I’m sharing a bonus episode of the podcast today! The last time I chatted with today’s guest was in 2020 and in the midst of a lockdown during the pandemic when we did a special video together. Now, two years later, Angela Iermieri joins me on the More Money Podcast to discuss inflation, rising costs, rising interest rates, and the very real possibility that a recession is coming in the near future.

Angela Iermieri is a financial planner and personal finance expert with over 20 years of experience, as well as a spokesperson for Desjardins Group. She shares her expertise and educates people on personal finance by writing articles in various internal and external publications, and by putting together informational videos, webinars, and conferences.

In this episode, Angela outlines the differences between inflation and interest rates (and their special relationship with each other), what inflation was like at its peak in the 1980s (and why it was a very different scenario than what we're experiencing today), and what we can do as individuals in our daily lives to help quell inflation so it gets back down to a normal level.

Like many millennials, I was sold the idea that as long as I got a degree, I’d be able to secure a well-paying job and have a long and successful career. However, as I soon learned after graduation, a degree is no longer a guarantee of anything (besides years of debt repayments perhaps). That's why I knew I needed to have Dr. Zakiya Akerele on the podcast to discuss her new book, aptly named Dump Your Degree, to explore how to make the most out of your degree anyway and how to give your career a headstart if you're still working towards your diploma.

Dr. Akerele is an Atlanta-based educator and speaker. She received her Ph.D. at Fordham University and has served in various capacities at higher education institutions and at social justice, political, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) both in the U.S. and abroad. She’s also the author of Dump Your Degree: How to Repurpose Your Education, Control Your Career, and Gain Financial Freedom.

In this episode, Dr. Akerele shares what led her as a passionate educator to write this book, as well as what advice is no longer relevant for Gen Z when it comes to higher education, and why she thinks mentors are vital to a burgeoning career. She also gives some great tips on how to network with the connections you already possess.

Learning never ends when it comes to investing, which is why I’m always keen to have new guests on the show to share their unique perspectives and knowledge on the subject. This week, I’m joined by an investing expert and popular YouTuber Joseph Hogue.

After serving in the Marine Corps, Joseph Hogue went on to work in corporate finance and real estate leading him to a career in investment analysis, in which he holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation. In 2014, Joseph left behind the corporate world to build his own online business, which included starting his wildly popular YouTube channel Let’s Talk Money (seriously, he has over 550,000 subscribers!).

In this episode, Joseph shares the good and the bad about YouTube, his own investing strategy, and the terrible investing advice to avoid at all costs. Since clickbait thrives on social media platforms, Joseph also shares why you should be aware that some creators treat investing as if it's part of the entertainment industry. We get deep and nerdy about investing, so be prepared!

Have you ever wondered what it takes to run a short-term rental on Airbnb or Vrbo? Today we’re breaking down the cost, time, and skills you need to have in order to become a 5-star rated host. To help shed light on all the nitty gritty details of short-term rental ownership is Annie Sloan, the Co-Founder, and CEO of The Host Co.

As an experienced host and real estate investor herself, Annie got her start working in film and TV as a producer and director for some of your favourite HTGV shows. Since then, she has also taken on Creative Director roles at both Facebook and Twitter before co-founding her company The Host Co.

In this episode, Annie shares her passion for hospitality and how her early experiences (pre-Airbnb even) as a short-term rental host led her to create a one-stop shop for hosts to help monetize their AirBnBs while creating a better experience for their guests. Annie also shares her thoughts on it being a form of passive income and if this could be a way for the younger generation to enter the real estate market.

No one gets married thinking that they’ll get divorced one day. Unfortunately, not all marriages last and if you find yourself in this position, who do you turn to when it comes to getting help with your finances? This week on the podcast, I have CPA and author of Untying the Knot Kelly LaVallie who joins me to discuss how to navigate the complexities of untying your finances from your ex and how to start again on a good financial foot.

Kelly LaVallie is the President of LaVallie & Associates Advisory Services Ltd. with over 25 years of experience in the accounting world. After years of seeing her clients go through divorce and only being able to provide limited financial support, she made the choice to transition her firm into one that worked exclusively with clients in the stages of divorce.

Not only that, this year she released her first book, Untying the Knot - Protecting Your Emotional and Financial Health During Divorce, to help better answer people's financial questions about divorce and share how taking back control of your finances can be incredibly empowering when starting a new life for yourself.

Have you ever felt like you aren’t being seen or heard at the office? Or have you experienced micro-aggressions from your co-workers before? Unfortunately, you’re not alone. After writing an article in the New York Times called “How to Succeed When You’re Marginalized or Discriminated Against at Work,” my guest and journalist Alan Henry went on to write his newly released book Seen, Heard, and Paid, a book all about navigating toxic work environments and giving marginalized groups of people the tools they need to succeed in their careers.

Alan Henry is a prominent journalist, editor, and author. He was previously the Smarter Living editor at The New York Times and the editor-in-chief of the productivity and lifestyle blog Lifehacker. He is now the author of the newly released book, Seen, Heard, and Paid: The New Work Rules for the Marginalized and is the senior editor at Wired.

In this episode, Alan shares how his experiences in a toxic work environment led him to write his new book. He also shares what language to use when you experience microaggressions at work and also what quantifies as a microaggression. Alan shares the importance of having “psychology safety” at work and why his most significant tip is to keep a work diary. This is a jam-packed conversation you don’t want to miss!
